Message from the President

It is hard to believe that the holiday season is upon us already.  I hope everyone enjoys a wonderful holiday season with friends and family.

Our many committees have been hard at work doing many projects to benefit ACDA membership.  The TEFAP/CSFP committee had their first webinar.  The Education Committee has a year-long schedule of webinars, has developed a template resource for bids and contracts, and is developing a national train the trainer program for speakers.  The Processing Committee had a productive meeting in October and they developed a processing resource manual, which is posted on the ACDA website.  With the Industry and Associate membership groups, the Processing committee will be working with USDA partners on the BMI process.

The Planning Committee is arranging speakers and moderators for our conference which is April 27th – 30th in Seattle, Washington.  Based on membership feedback, this year’s conference will run from Monday to Thursday, which will reduce weekend travel.  This is ACDA’s first visit to the Northwest in over fifteen years.

I look forward to working with everyone to make this year a successful year for ACDA and the USDA programs which are so important to the customers they serve.  Feel free to email me with any thoughts or ideas you have.

Mike Birkmeyer, ACDA President

Industry Update

Greetings and Happy New Year – although I have been celebrating July 1 as my official New Year’s Day for a while now.  There are quite a few exciting happenings as we prepare for diversion season (and let our charge be, “divert what you will use and use what you divert.”)

          • The BMI for Processing.  The ACDA Industry Workgroup met for two days in late October discussing the vision of USDA, which involves forecasting, long-term contracting and reporting.  In this context, forecasting refers to the forecasting of raw material and reporting refers to what we currently call our MPRs and NMPR.  At ACDA 2020, there will be at least one session on the BMI for Processing, focusing on the long-term contracting piece.
    • Speaking of ACDA 2020, it helps if you actually look at a calendar when talking about the coming year.  Our next conference is shifting from the normal routine, with pre-cons scheduled for Monday, April 27th.  The Opening General Session will take place on Tuesday, April 28th and the Closing Session will be at noon on Thursday, April 30th.   Seattle, WA is your destination with the conference sessions being held downtown at the Hyatt Regency.
    • Knowing we are halfway through the School Year, it’s a great time to take a look at RA balances.  Most State Agencies have completed their sweeps by now and usage should be in the upper 40 to 50 percent.  No usage?   That’s a problem.  Less than 25 percent usage?  That’s a problem.  Better to look into these low usage balances now rather then wait until the end of the year.  Remember the guidance of FD-064 (Revised):  take your total usage ending June of the prior School Year and divide by 10.  This is your Average Monthly Usage.  Then take your balance as of today and divide by that number.  If the answer is above six, you are above the allowable Months On Hand Inventory level.  There is a reason for everything!  Knowing the reason is half the battle.  Being the Industry warrior you are, get it figured out and wrestle it down.

Happy New Year to everyone – even if we are six months ahead of it.

Education Committee Update

Please be advised that the Education Committee has posted a New Resource to the ACDA Members Only Portion of the website: Child Nutrition Programs – Required Federal Contract Provisions. This document is meant to assist ACDA recipient agency membership with complying with minimum Federal provisions required in solicitations and contracts. If you are not a member, click here to consider joining and gain access to this, and many other “Member Only” documents.

Communications Committee Update

Thank you to everyone that submitted hashtag ideas to identify a new ACDA hashtag.  The communication committee voted on our top five favorites, and then ACDA President, Mike Birkmeyer, made the executive decision of selecting the top winner #USDAFoodsinschools.

Additionally, we are gearing up for ANC, which will be here in no time.  Keep updated on social media, and show us your excitement, using the ANC 2020 designated hashtag  - #ACDATakesSeattle.

Just a few friendly reminders as we come to the end of 2019.  Don’t forget that as an ACDA member, you are entitled to free marketing materials for shows and booths that you may have scheduled. Several national events have been added to our USDA Foods Event Calendar, and we couldn’t be more thrilled - Please keep adding them!

Finally, don’t forget that ACDA has a Job Postings Board and we’d love to see more job posts coming in!  If you have a USDA Foods related position that you would like to publish on the ACDA website, send that information to info@commodityfoods.org.  This is free for ACDA members!  If you are not a current member, sign up today!
